The Joy of Eating

The Joy of Eating

Chungking Mansions is a place in Hong Kong unlike any other. Perhaps, as they say in the movie “Aladdin,” it is a “diamond in the rough.” From all visual appearances, this complex of narrow hallways filled with Indian food shops and electronics stores does not seem like a good place to eat. But, find your way upstairs (or ask any of the dozens of hawker men outside, who work for many of the restaurants within, to escort you) and a delicious, not-too-expensive Indian meal is yours for the taking.

Some people are familiar with Chungking Mansions because of its role in the film “Chungking Express.” It’s a great film, and it does provide some great visuals of the place in its footage, too. The complex is located in Tsim Sha Tsui on Nathan Road, most easily accessible from MTR exit D1. There are many hostels inside, as well as restaurants and shops; and though I’ve never stayed in one, it wouldn’t be my first choice of residence during a visit to Hong Kong.
